Android creator launches Essential Phone with bezel-less design & dual rear cameras

Andy Rubin, the guy who created the Android operating system has launched his first Android smartphone through his company, Essential. The phone which is named the Essential Phone is a high-end phone with internals found inside flagship smartphones.

The defining feature of the Essential Phone is the ability for us to connect a 360-degree camera which can be used to shoot UHD videos to it via a magnetic connector, as well as a charging dock. What makes it more distinctive is that these connections can be made via small metal pogo pins which alleviate the discomfort associated with these extra connections.

Software

Essential said that its phone, the Essential Phone would run the Android operating system, but didn’t specify which version of Android the smartphone would be booting out of the box. We expect that it would run Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box.

Design & Display

Essential brings it big with a 5.7-inch display which is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and has a QHD (2560 * 1312) pixel resolution. It has a stunning design especially at the rear which looks like the rear of the Google Pixel XL without the double colour layers and with the beautiful array of lenses at the top.

The phone also has an edge-to-edge bezel-less design which sees it competing favourably with numerous similarly-designed smartphones in the market. It is designed with titanium and ceramic, the combination of which gives the phone a premium look and feel.

Memory & Performance

Under the hood, the Essential Phone is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with eight processing cores and a 2.45GHz clock speed. It has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

Camera

It comes with a dual camera setup at the rear, consisting of a 13MP RGB + Mono camera with image fusion technology, and a 13MP True Monochrome camera with a f/1.85 aperture. On its own, the smartphone can record 4K@30fps, 1080p@60fps and 720p@120fps videos, and when connected to the 360-degree camera, can shoot UHD videos at 30 frames per second.

At the front, the phone sports an 8MP camera with a 16:9 aspect ratio and f/2.2 aperture. It offers video recording in different resolutions like 4K@30fps, 1080p@60fps and 720p@120fps.

Battery

The Essential Phone packs a 3040mAh battery with a fast charging technology which ensures that you have enough time to capture as many high-quality videos and pictures as you want in a day.
